How is the cost-of-living squeeze affecting people in debt? Citizens Advice will explore this at its first Data Insights event of 2026.

In 2025, Citizens Advice nationally supported more than 400,000 people with debt — an increase of nearly 45% compared with five years ago.

Many of the people Citizens Advice supports are facing a double squeeze. Persistently high living costs continue to stretch household budgets, while debts built up over recent years have not gone away. Rather than easing, these pressures are increasingly overlapping.

With unstable incomes and limited financial security, many people struggle to escape debt. Support often falls short, leaving people trapped in debt that harms their health and wellbeing.

Citizens Advice will host its first Data Insights event of the year on 26th February, examining what its data and the latest Breathing Space report reveal about rising debt amid continued cost-of-living and winter pressures.

The online event is being held on Thursday, 26th February from 2pm- 3pm.
