53-year-old Cathleen from Bargoed was challenging a benefit decision at tribunal.

Cathleen dropped in to see us at one of our community advice sessions. She had been turned down for Personal Independence Payment (PIP) at the initial application and at the Mandatory Reconsideration stages. Cathleen was appealing the decision when she spoke with our adviser.

She explained that she was unable to work as she suffers with osteoarthritis, sciatic and other mobility issues. She had been given a date to attend a tribunal in person but felt she would struggle to attend. Our adviser was able to contact the Court and Tribunal Service and request a video hearing on behalf of Cathleen. He outlined what medical evidence she would need to fully illustrate the impact her health conditions have on her and how to get that information.

He then explained how a tribunal works, who is involved in the decision making process and gave advice on how to answer their questions so they fully appreciated the nature of her health conditions.

Cathleen was given the confidence and knowledge to represent herself at the tribunal and successfully appeal the DWP decision. She was awarded the Daily Living rate and received a backdated award of £3,463. She is now £61 a week better off.
