Christopher, aged 65, had not worked for around 18 months.

He rang Advicelink Cymru for help maximising his household income.

He and his wife Sandra were living off a private pension of £68 and what savings they had. Christopher could not make as Sandra needed care due for cancer.

Our adviser carried out a benefit check and determined they could be entitled to contribution-based New Style Employment Support Allowance due to their health conditions, if they have paid enough National Insurance contributions. He advised Christopher to speak with his GP for a fit to work note to support the application.

Christopher applied for New Style Employment Support Allowance and was awarded the assessment rate. The award was backdated to the date he applied. Our help and support gave Christopher the knowledge and confidence to apply for certain benefits and maximise his income.
